1. Research Technician

The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) works at the crossroads of livestock and poverty, bringing high-quality livestock science, communications and capacity building to bear on poverty reduction and sustainable development.

ILRI is one of 15 centres supported by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). It consists of a Hub based on the ILRI campus in Nairobi, Kenya and a network of regional nodes and other affiliated laboratories and organizations throughout the region.

The BecA Hub facilities are world class, including a range of molecular, plant transformation, and genomics laboratories and equipment (e.g. 454sequencing, Biosafety level 3 laboratory, plant growth facilities).

The Hub hosts and conducts research in crop, microbe and livestock areas where new developments in science offer promise to address previously intractable problems constraining Africa’s development.

Capacity building is a major goal of all activities. The scope covers agriculture and food security and their intersections with human health and nutrition, and the sustainable use of Africa’s natural resources.

The BecA Hub seeks to recruit a Research Technician to provide support to a team conducting genetic diversity studies for breeding strategies using molecular markers.

This position is a two year term appointment with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon individual performance and continued funding, and is based at ILRI’s Headquarters in Nairobi.

Key responsibilities


  • Conducting research using molecular tools
  • Establishing and curating of databases containing overall project data
  • Genotyping and sequence analysis
  • Developing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
  • Ensuring good laboratory practices including proper maintenance of various laboratory equipment
  • Contributing to capacity building activities

    Requirements

  • MSc degree in biological sciences with two years of experience or equivalent, or alternatively a Bachelor of Science degree with five years’ experience

    Key Responsibilities

  • Contribute to ReSAKSS’ analytical work specifically, in designing and managing the collection and analysis of gender disaggregated data on agriculture and rural development indicators, agricultural value chains and trade;

    Contribute to synthesis of studies and literature around gender issues affecting agriculture and rural development in the region to generate policy relevant messages;

  • Knowledge and experience in agricultural and rural development issues in Sub Saharan Africa;

    Key Responsibilities

  • Design and manage the collection and analysis of gender disaggregated data on agriculture and rural development, agricultural value chains and trade.
  • Develop tools and frameworks for analysing agricultural value chains from a gender perspective.
  • Implement, supervise and monitor data collection efforts in countries in Sub-Saharan Africa and Asia.

  • Contribute to the development, testing and analysis of poverty, gender and equity indicators for monitoring and evaluating agriculture and livestock research and development projects.
  • Provide strategic guidance to other ILRI scientists and partners in the collection and analysis of sex disaggregated data.
  • Co-supervise students doing their research on gender, agriculture value chains and trade.
  • Synthesise studies and literature around gender issues affecting agriculture and rural development in the region to generate policy relevant messages.

    Requirements

  • A Ph.D. in Development Economics, Agricultural Economics or Economics with emphasis on gender and agriculture development and poverty analysis.
  • At least three years post-Ph.D. working experience in research and policy analysis in developing countries, preferably working on gendered empirical analysis of agricultural development, value chains, and agricultural trade.
  • Knowledge of evaluation methods, value chain or sectoral assessments, applied micro-econometric methods, household and intra-household analysis.
  • A good understanding of gender issues in agriculture and rural development and how to design, collect and analyse sex disaggregated data.
  • Proven analytical and research skills through a track record of scientific publications.
  • Experience in making presentations to large audiences at national and regional levels.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills, writing ability, organizational and administrative skills.

    ILRI seeks to recruit a Post-doctoral scientist under the Combating Infectious Diseases of Livestock for International Development (CIDLID), CBPP project and work under the supervision of the veterinary epidemiologist in the Vaccines and Diagnostics Team of the Biotechnology Theme and in close collaboration with other researchers working on CBPP within the Team.

    This position will require significant initiative, problem solving skills and the ability to work independently.

    The principal responsibility of the Post Doc will be to develop mathematical models of CBPP for the purposes of analyzing CBPP transmission dynamics and the performance of biotechnological interventions intended as tools to mitigate the impact of CBPP.

    The Post doc will also contribute to data analysis of the results of CBPP experiments especially where the results may contribute to more reliable estimates of modelling parameters.

    Responsibilities:

  • Participation in team discussions to design the CBPP research program, CBPP transmission models and CBPP experiments;
  • Conduct dialogue with decision-makers and other stakeholders on CBPP model design;
  • Expand existing CBPP models available within the research team to include additional parameters and the analysis of the impact diagnostic test performance on the efficacy of the targeting of CBPP control interventions;
  • Develop new CBPP models using appropriate techniques and software packages if/where there is a consensus among the CBPP team that additional models would add value to the research program;
  • Analyze results of CBPP research that can contribute to the modelling process;
  • Conduct dialogue with decision-makers on the implications of modelling outcomes and update analysis based on stakeholder feedback;
  • Prepare and present results;
  • Preparation and publication of scientific articles.

    Requirements

  • A Ph.D. in the life sciences;
  • A proven record reflecting experience in research design, quantitative and qualitative analytic methods and producing peer-reviewed outputs;
  • Experience in multi-disciplinary and multi-national team of researchers and development practitioners;
  • A track record that reflect strong problem solving skills and initiative;
